The men and women of the Tartit group are Tuaregs of the Kel Antessar confederation who fled the repression of the Mali army and joined the refugee camp in Bassikounou in far-eastern Mauritania. Many people that normally lived far apart were brought together there and it was at this time that the group was formed, numbering then more than twenty people. Each member of the group has since gone his own way and various members of the group only reform for touring purposes.

Music, song and poetry occupy an extremely large and fundamental place in Tuareg society. In all the chaos that the 20th century and its struggles have caused, they have remained a constant mark of Tuareg identity. Here is the Tuareg oral patrimony, as it was presented to an European audience in December 1995 during the festival Voix de Femmes.
