The devastating earthquake that hit Haiti in January left a lasting impression on former Pogues frontman, Shane MacGowan, who decided to record a single to raise money for the victims. He chose "I put a spell on you", composed by the eccentric Screaming Jay Hawkins. The original version's exuberance is revived in this new take on a classic: Shane Macgowan discovers his inner blues, Chrissie Hynde (from the Pretenders) gets similarly soulful, Nick Cave goes lower than the low notes and Bobby Gillespie (from Primal Scream) joins them on the chorus for some riotous grunting, ... Bringing up the percussive rear is Mick Jones (from the Clash) on a fire extinguisher and Johnny Depp finally seals the deal with an ecstatic guitar solo.
