Serenada

If there is one band that best reflects the multiple musical heritage of Curacao, then it is the ten piece Grupo Serenada. It draws its repertoire from the history of African, European and regional Caribbean influences that have shaped Curacao's music. Grupo Serenada was formed in 1975 when a rock group merged with a youth church choir. From the outset the group has enthusiastically explored the boundaries of the local music of Curacao, experimenting with vocal harmonization, rhythms and musical styles, while always aiming to preserve the essence of the local folk tradition. A capella songs form an essential part of the group's repertoire, where the members mimic the basic elements of instruments and rhythms.
