Sékouba Bambino is an author, songwriter and singer who also belonged to the famous Africando collective and Bembeya Jazz, and is quite understandably the most famous ambassador of the Guinean culture. He gives new youth to the Guinean griotic art by introducing beautiful occidental influences in his music, allying tradition and modernity with much skill. The result is a definitely modern music which still manages to preserve its African authenticity through the Manding texture of his simple voice, the traditional instruments (flute, balafon, cora) and the feminine back-up vocals.

"Ambiance Ballon" is a peculiar album as it contains a few soukous inspired dance tracks with an added stadium atsmophere, complete with football comments. The band is brilliant, and it sounds about the same as it does live. This is first and foremost about excellent voices, Sekouba's of course, one of Africa's greatest, and those of his five back-up ladies. The songs are Manding traditionals, carefully modernised, and with beautiful kora solos from no less than Toumani and Mamadou Diabate on several tracks.

Sinikan is the last album by the griot Sékouba Bambino, in which he keeps mixing traditional music with occidental influences. The mix is successful, thanks to the arrangements of the French François Bréant who had already displayed his very particular musical sensitivity for Salif Keita on the unforgettable "Soro" album (1987). "Sinikan" strikes the right balance between African roots and Europop polish. It is a great disc, pure and simple, one that deserves to become as much of a latter-day reference point for current West African pop as "Soro" was in its day.

On this album, the West African Manding tradition is as always noticeable. Bambino's warm voice suits the tasteful arrangements. The backing musicians are comprised of the West African A–list, with choristers such as Djanka Diabate and Kandia Kouyate, with Baba Sissiko on the guitar and Diely Conde on the kora. In order to have variation on the disk, five arrangers were employed – from Guinea, Mali, Cameroon, Cape Verde and France. The Frenchman is none other than Jean Phillipe Rykiel, who has worked with Salif Keita and Youssou N’Dour. A warm and lovely disk.
