Troughout "Mouneïssa", her debut solo album, Rokia Traoré reveals an approach which is both determined and original. Rokia Traoré risks, for example, an instrumental pairing never previously attempted. She pairs the balaba balafon, an instrument characteristic of her region, with the ngoni, the instrument favoured by the Bambara griots. Such a partnership yields, in more than one unique combination of tones, a delightful tension which contributes to the groove.
Released in 1998, on Label Bleu Indigo.
