Miriam Makeba
A pioneer of African music and civil rights leader, Mariam Makeba was born in Johannesburg but was forced into exile and subsequently popularized her unique blend of African musical traditions elsewhere in Africa, Europe and the United States. Known as the Empress of African Song, she died in 2008.

Exiled from her South African homeland and under investigation by the FBI after her marriage to political activist Stokely Carmichael, in 1968, Miriam and Stokely fled to Guinea. There Miriam was able to continue her career by recording and performing for the state-owned label, Syliphone. These 16 tracks represent some of the best that she recorded during that time.
