Markus James

Markus James' Virginian origins unconditionally explain his early inspiration for blues music. It was only after settling in Northern California and recording in a rock and R'n'B style that he travelled through the world from Haiti (where he studied traditional ensemble drumming) to Mali in 1994. From then on began a series of collaborations with traditional Malian musicians and griots, in which blues-based songs are backed up by traditional instruments such as calabash and kamele n'goni.

This album, recorded in Timbuctu in 2005 in Mali, captures James' long term collaboration with Malian group including Solo Sidibe on kamele n' goni, master of the njarka Hassi Sare and Hamma Sankare, who provided the calabash percussion on Ali Farka Touré's later albums. The album demonstrates how closely connected American blues and Malian tradition can get.
