Liu Fang is from Kunming, Yunnan Province in the People's Republic of China. She studied the pipa at the Kunming Art School and then at the Shanghai Conservatory. She continued using her skill when she became the solo pipa player for the Kunming Orchestra for Chinese Music. The pipa is a four stringed instrument that has a similar appearence to the lute and one of the oldest musical instruments in history. With this instrument, she has won many prizes both locally and national.
