A former police officer, Husayn Ismâîl al-Azami was born in 1952 in the al-Azamiyya neighborhood to a family of musicians. His grandfather's great knowledge is quoted in historical works. His father was a famous hymn composer. He started his career at the age of 20 by singing at the Baghdad Museum theater. Al-Azami always defended the colors of the scolorly music of his country, while selecting poems that are close to contemporary preoccupations. He met the French musician Julien Jalaleddin Weiss in 1986. They played in a number of concerts before recording together.
