Harry Belafonte

Harry Belafonte is a popular figure in America who will always be most remembered for his famous Calypso song, "The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)". The African-American, Belafonte, grew up in Jamaica before serving with the US Army in World War II. Originally targetting a post-war career in acting, he attended the same drama classes as Marlon Brando and Rod Steiger. Shortly afterwards, however, his smooth voice and natural ability to perform in front of crowds gained him a recording contract. His soulful, refined voice and the bouncy, Caribbean melodies would create a brief, calypso beat craze, earning him the title of being the first musician to sell one million albums. Harry Belafonte remained in the US spotlight for many years to come, hosting a successful TV show and becoming a renowned civil rights activist.
