Born in 1963, in the Iraqi city of Kerbala, Farida Mohammad Ali ("the special one" in Arab) knew that she was destined to something big. From her early childhood, she was surrounded by the sounds of tapes and records playing Iraqi classical music, maqams, Persian music and traditional folk songs. Spotted by the officials of Iraqi television, she soon becomes a singer of children's songs. Later on, her meeting with the very famous ud player Munir Bashir will make her integrate the Iraqi Heritage Ensemble at the Bagdad Conservatory, singing perfectly the maqams, classical pieces, that until then were specially reserved to men. After her husband died in the war Iran-Irak, she left Irak for Holland where she still lives and where from she pursues her international carrier.
