Ernest Ranglin is an internationally-known Jamaican guitarist. As a child, he had two uncles who played guitar and ukulele. He practiced on their instruments and was given a guitar for his seventh birthday. In his teens, he began performing live, locally and in the Bahamas. By the early 1950s, Ranglin had become a proficient jazz guitarist and toured overseas. He also recorded several tracks at Studio One, including some of the first ska recordings. He began attracting international attention in the '60s when he traveled to London, England to perform at Ronnie Scott's jazz nightclub. He was awarded the Order of Distinction from the Jamaican Government for his contributions to music.
