Debashish’s development of new slide guitars sets him far apart from other artists, both on the international circuit and among Indian musicians who play Indian music on Western instruments.

Based on 'Abhigyana Shakuntalam' (The Recognition of Shakuntala), an epic love story written by the great Sanskrit poet Kalidasa, the music of this album traces the legend of King Dushyanta and the beautiful Shakuntala. In the tale, they fall in love and marry but an evil sage curses Shakuntala, keeping them apart. Fortunately, the spell is finally broken and they are happily reunited for all eternity. A beautiful album and musical journey through an epic Indian love story, "O Shakuntala!" is Debashish’s third album on Riverboat Records. His first, "3: Calcutta Slide-Guitar," won the BBC World Music Award in 2007, and his second, "Calcutta Chronicles," was nominated for a Grammy in 2008.

For those who have not heard Debashish before, you are missing out. He is quite possibly the finest guitarist breathing today. For those steeped in western guitar, imagine a player with the speed and precision to make any speed-metal virtuoso hang his head in shame, while packing so much soul and emotion into each and every note that B. B. King would burst out in tears on hearing it. Don't be intimidated by "Indian classical music". This music is alive and sensual, and you don't need a degree in music theory to "get it". Just put it on, feel the groove, and be carried away.
