Born of Senegalese parents in Bobo Dioulasso, one of the main towns of Burkina Faso, Cheikh Lo grew up in a multicultural environment. As an adolescent, he taught himself to play the guitar and the drums. In 1976, he accepted an invitation to join a local group, Orchestra Volta Jazz, as a percussionist. He remained with the band until moving to the capital city of Dakar in 1980. In 1994, Youssou N'Dour discovered him and produced his first album "Né La Thiass," which launched his kind of softened mbalax, enriched by elements of salsa, Congolese rumba, folk, and jazz.
