Cheb Hasni
The Algerian singer Hasni Chakroun, aka Cheb Hasni, the inventor of "Rai Love," is still called "the nightingale of Rai". Adulated by the Algerian youth, he loved to sing of carnal love and wrote over 400 songs. He was assassinated at the age of 26 by Islamist fundamentalists in his native neighborhood of Oran, Gambetta, in 1994 for having addressed themes such as divorce and alcohol in his songs. He leaves behind him the image of a martyr and remains a symbol and an idol for a whole generation.

In 1992, Cheb Hasni recorded a song, whose title sounds like an answer to the rumour that he was dead: "Gualou Hasni Met" ("they say Hasni is dead").
Unfortunatly, it was a premonition as Hasni got killed two years later.
This compilation of his best songs shows that behind the love songs, Hasni was singing about the despair of the Algerian youth.
