Chavela Vargas
Although she was born in 1919 in Costa Rica, Chavela Vargas is an iconic figure of Mexican music. When she arrived in Mexico, at only 14, she dressed as a man, wearing her characteristic red jorongo, smoked cigars, drank heavily, and carried a gun. She became a professional singer in her thirties. She is now especially known for her rendition of Mexican rancheras. Called "la voz áspera de la ternura" ("the rough voice of tenderness"), she became a muse to figures such as Pedro Almodóvar and Joaquín Sabina.

Aged 90, Vargas decided that she would make a record but only if it was hers. She asked for artistic direction, deciding what to record and who to record with. It would be a testament and a celebration. For this reason, Chavela wanted to make a record of duets, featuring her friends and admirers : Eugenia León, a woman of enormous standing and talent in Mexico, Lila Downs, la Negra Chagra, the Argentinian singer who has been a close friend for the past ten years, Joaquín Sabina, her neighbour Mario Avila, with whom she composed '¿A dónde te vas paloma?' and the cellist Jimena Giménez Cacho.
