Sly & Robbie

Sly & Robbie is one of Reggae's most prolific and long-lasting duos. Drummer Lowell Dunbar (nicknamed Sly after Sly Stone, one of his favorite musicians) and bass guitarist Robert Shakespeare started working together in the mid '70s after having established themselves separately on the Jamaican scene. Sly and Robbie may well be the most prolific recording artists ever. One estimate is that they have played on or produced more than 200,000 songs.

"Sly & Robbie Present Taxi Trio" is the second collection of rarities by legendary reggae group Sly & Robbie. On this seminal compilation, three of reggae music's biggest superstars — Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, and Sugar Minott — and their crucial Taxi material from the '80s are resurrected. To hear the warm drums and bass on the album's opener, Dennis Brown's roots rocker 'Sitting and Watching,' is a not-so-subtle reminder of how powerful a hit-making force Sly & Robbie have been in popular culture over the past three decades. This collection is jammed with essential reggae classics — including the aforementioned Brown's "Revolution" and Gregory Isaacs' gently pleading 'Soon Forward' — and every track is a fantastic trip down memory lane. But if there's a true highlight on this compilation, it would have to be the six contributions from the late Sugar Minott.
