Pete Seeger (born in 1919) is the dean of 20th Century folk singers. As of this writing he has been performing and lending his energies to causes he believes in for more than sixty years. He is best known for his work with the group the Weavers, formed in 1949, whose version of Lead Belly's "Gooodnight, Irene" reached number one in 1951. Pete, now in his eighties, continues to make an occasional recording, still plays an occasional concert, where as always he gets his audiences to sing along with him in unison. He still fights hard for what he believes in.

Brilliantly captures the exhilaration of Seeger's concert experience. With extraordinary talent, Seeger addresses salient social issues--his trademark for over 50 years--in song: If I Had a Hammer, Greensleeves, and We Shall Not be Moved. The complete concert of 41 songs was recorded live in Sanders Theatre at Harvard University in 1980 and illuminates the skill of a master performer and the dedication of an enduring political activist. "...a reminder of the virtues and aesthetics that make [folk music] such an enduring medium." -- Dirty Linen

This album of songs mostly composed in the early 1960s includes two songs by Malvina Reynolds, as well as "The New York J-D Blues," composed by a New York teenager puzzled by a misguided subway ad campaign about juvenile delinquency. Much of the material included in this collection was printed in the influential folk music magazine Broadside, and several songs—including "Mack the Bomb" and "The New York J-D Blues"—appear on Smithsonian Folkways' The Best of Broadside (SF40130). Pete Seeger has become an American tradition right along with the songs he sings. This recording, first released in 1959, captures and conveys Pete's personal warmth, engaging style, and ability to educate children while entertaining them. He sings old favorites such as "On Top of Old Smokey," "Skip to My Lou," and "John Henry," introducing them as songs "you never hear on the radio,...on jukeboxes,...or on TV...Just ordinary songs which one person teaches to another." These songs have endured as part of the American soundscape partly because of Pete's tireless dedication to their preservation. This album gives a whole new generation of children the opportunity to learn and sing these classic American folksongs. Appropriate for children ages 5 and up. This collection reminds us that the ballad's purpose, first and foremost, is to tell a story. These songs narrate tales of ordinary people—hoboes and lovers and sailors—and their extraordinary deeds. From "John Henry" to "Lady Margaret," Pete Seeger's expressive style is ideally communicative. Initially released in 1957.
