Compay Segundo
Compay Segundo was undoubtedly one of the most famous figures of Cuban 'son'. Born in 1907 in Siboney, a little village close to Santiago de Cuba, he started playing the guitar when he was just a child. He passed away on 13 July 2003 at the age of 95. A legend both in Cuba and around the world.

Singing apolitical lyrics, Compay was never bothered by censorship. Which is why he was never tempted by exile. "I am far too attached to my country to leave". With the renaissance of "Son" in the early 1990s, and in particular the success of the "Buena Vista Social Club" project, he returned to the limelight, without letting it go to his head.
