Gwo Ka music is an heirloom of slavery in the French Antilles, particularly Guadeloupe. Gwo Ka also means dancing, games, humour, and a certain way of being. Today the band Kalindi-Ka is a part of that movement.
This all-female polyphonic, polyrhythmic choir brings a note of originality to the interpretation of old songs.
The more recent compositions were inspired by traditional songs and enriched by Cuban rhythms. The djembe, comga and bata join the ka drums, thus extending improvisational possibilities. The lead singer, Marie-Line Dahomay, sometimes accompanies herself on the Indian ektara.
Yo was recorded in 1999 by Kalindi-Ka - Released in 2000 on Playa Sound.
